Centre for Language and Social Justice Research Event

The Centre for Language and Social Justice Research (CLSJR) 2024 research showcase event is an opportunity to learn more about the diverse range of research projects being carried out by staff and students, and to discuss current and future research directions.

CLSJR conducts a range of research which examines why and how social inequalities and injustices are enacted through language. CLSJR also explores how challenging and offering alternative language practices can be an effective way of achieving positive social change. Some of the overarching questions asked in research conducted within CLSJR are:

Who has access to language and linguistic resources, and who has access to opportunities for language learning?
How does hate speech operate in different contexts?
How does language work to either include or exclude particular identities, individuals or groups from certain activities or areas of life?
How does silence operate to deny people a voice, or sometimes to empower people?
What happens when people don’t have the language to express aspects of their identities and experiences?
Which languages, and varieties of language, hold more power or status than others, and why?

The ways in which these and other questions are researched, along with key research findings, will be shared and discussed at the event.

The event will involve a number of poster presentations of staff and student research along with opportunities for informal discussion and networking. Refreshments will be provided.
